Job Summary
The Student Help STARS Tutor is a Grant Funded, part-time, temporary position for current Southwest Tennessee Community College Students and will tutor K-3 grade students in reading. Every tutor must relate well to children, possess good oral communication skills, and perform related tasks as assigned.
The Southwest STARS (Saluqi Tutors Achieving Reading Success) Program is a reading tutoring program led by Southwest Tennessee Community College in partnership with local educational agencies, specifically Libertas School of Memphis, Promise Academy, and Capstone Education Group. Recent legislative changes will impact potential fourth grade level retention based on a student’s third grade English Language Arts (ELA) TCAP scores. As a result, this grant will provide key early interventions to move students from scoring Below or Approaching grade level to Met or Exceeded.
Each student should be tutored for two hours per week for 18 weeks and totaling 36 hours of tutoring instruction. At the end of the tutoring semester, students should be able to score a proficiency in their reading test.
Job Duties
- Tutor assists elementary aged children in the development of reading skills.
- Tutor students in one-on-one or small group sessions.
- Tutor will collaborate with the program coordinator to assess the student’s needs and how best to address them.
- Tutor is required to complete competency training prior to work starting as a tutor.
- Tutor must provide his/her own transportation.
- Unexcused and excessive absences or unsatisfactory performances will be grounds for dismissal.
Minimum Qualifications
- Received a degree from regionally accredited institution of higher learning OR
- Matriculated student seeking a degree in an area of education (or related fields) OR
- Matriculated student who has received an A or B in English Composition course(s) OR
- High school student who has a 3.0 GPA, passed English 2 End of Course Test, and 16 years old;
- Completion of and Competency in Early Reading Training, provided by Southwest, that is comprised of a full week of training on foundational reading skills that incorporate lessons concerning print concepts, phonological awareness, phonics, fluency, decoding, and vocabulary
Compensation and Hours
Each applicant must be able to commit to working a minimum of 4 hours over 2 days per week, going up to 16 hours over 4 days per week, serving up to 3 students per hour and up to 24 students per semester. The hours for tutoring are flexible but should occur in the morning, early afternoon, or after school.
Each hour will be spent with the students, though a small part of each hour is devoted to preparing, wrapping up, and record keeping. Tutoring will take place in either a Southwest Tennessee Community College campus/center or one of the partner schools. Tutors must arrange their work schedules with the tutoring program coordinator.
Tutoring wages are $28 per hour.
