Hours: 40 hours per week, standard Monday- Friday 8:00am- 5:00pm, flexibility is required on evenings and weekends
FLSA status: Non-exempt
Earliest Start Date: As soon as possible.
Salary: Commensurate with education and experience.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes the employer to obtain criminal history record information. A valid driver's license issued by the State where the applicant resides and insurability as defined in UTS 157 may be required to perform the position's essential functions.
Purpose of Position
Essential Functions
Knowledgeable in safety requirements and adheres to all safety procedures in critical labs including but not limited to BSL- III Labs, cleanrooms, and other high-risk laboratories.
Assist in collaborating with research scientists, research engineers, and faculty members to help in the design and functionality of research equipment installation and ensure work is done as manufacturer recommendations.
Maintains and repairs specialized equipment including but not limited to:
- Incinerators
- Chilled water pumps
- Domestic hot water pumps
- Air compressors
- High temperature hot water pumps
- Air dryers
- Vacuum pumps
- RO/DI water systems
- Deaerators
- Air handling units
- Steam boilers
Performs troubleshooting and repairs of water lines, gas lines, sanitary sewer, storm water conveyance and alterations of utility lines to accommodate the installation of new fixtures.
Must have the ability and experience to find and clear obstructions in pipe systems with drain cleaning machine.
Locates and marks underground pipe in existing locations throughout campus.
Perform inspection and repairs of back flow preventer assemblies. Records test results and follow appropriate procedures as per the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality (TCEQ) guidelines.
Ability to properly use electrical testers to troubleshoot electrical water heaters and solenoid valves.
Able to repair or replace electric or gas water heaters.
Joins pipes by use of screws, bolts, fittings, solder, pvc solvent, and caulks joints by approved methods.
Installs and repairs plumbing fixtures such as sinks, , water heaters, hot water tanks, garbage disposal units, dishwashers, lab equipment, safety equipment and water softeners.
Purchases and controls inventories, shop supplies, machinery and equipment. Generates a report of work orders needed to address shop issues. Electronically maintain logs and appropriate data and records related to plumbing shop activities.
Estimates labor and material cost; reports the estimate to supervisor before submitting to work control system.
Troubleshoots systems to determine root cause of the problem and make the necessary corrective measures.
Implements installation and maintenance of plumbing systems based on as built blueprints and equipment maintenance and operation manuals.
Must be available on an “On Call” and after regular hours including work for the support of events and emergencies.
Frequently works without direct supervision.
Knowledge of the chemicals and their interactions, danger signs, production techniques, and disposal methods.
Review blueprints, building codes and specifications to determine work details, procedures, including ADA standards and methods. Work with the Planning and Construction Department and OFPC in the execution and inspection of construction projects.
Generates work orders when needed and follows up with the necessary repairs or adjustments.
Takes the lead on repair and installation projects, from the planning to the completion of the work order.
Knowledge and experience to identify and quickly analyze emergency situations, actions, and events.
Identifies information by categorizing, prioritizing, recognizing differences/similarities, and detecting changes in circumstances or events.
Ability to make safe and quick decisions in order to resolve the issue.
Generates and maintains a daily log, detailed annual work reports, backflow certifications and general plumbing shop records.
Locates and marks position of pipe, pipe connections and penetrations for pipes in walls, floors, roads and ground.
Cuts openings in walls and floors to accommodate pipe and pipe fittings.
Assembles and installs valves, pipe fittings, and pipes composed of metals, such as iron, steel, brass, and lead, and nonmetals, such as glass, vitrified clay, and plastic by approved methods.
Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook and Internet. Must have the ability to learn institutional software systems.
Knowledge of arithmetic, algebra and calculations to apply in plumbing systems.
Other duties may be assigned.
Supervisory Responsibilities: No supervisor responsibilities but must take the lead on repairs and projects
Qualifications
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.
Required Qualifications:
Education: High School diploma or (GED)
and
Experience: Four years of verified experience in the plumbing industry. Ability to obtain a Backflow Preventer License within one year of employment.
Preferred Qualifications: Journeyman Plumber License. Backflow Preventer License preferred.
